Recommended File & Folder Security Settings for WinXP

<back to Windows Links page>

First of all... if you are having problems accessing files and/or folders, such as changing read-only properties on them and "making them stick", make sure you are logged in as AN Administrator.  If not, then you cannot make such changes as a non-Administrator user.

If you are logged in as an Administrator and having problems, then you should first check your "Folder Options" settings... I recommend the following settings for semi-experienced Windows users.  If you are still having problems after setting the Folder Options as in the below screenshot, then continue on to the more involved and sledge-hammer approach to changing security settings in the next group of screen shots.

OK... I'm going to try to walk you through recommend NTFS file security settings you will need to do with XP-Home or Pro if you're having problems with permissions.  The basic difference with Pro is that you don't have to boot into safe mode, but do have to go to folder options and turn off (uncheck) simple file sharing.

1) Boot up into safe mode and log-in as ADMINISTRATOR (HOME ONLY)
1a) Make sure to log in as AN Administrator if using PRO.
2) Click (or double-click if that's how you have your settings) the "My Computer" icon.
3) RIGHT-click on the C-Drive icon and select "Properties"
4) Click on the "Security" tab (screen shot below)

5) Click the "Advanced" button... screen shot below. (Maker sure to check the "Replace permission..." checkbox at the bottom.

6) Next, highlight the Administrators listing, then click the "Edit" button, which brings up the following window... set Administrators as the next screen shot, then click ok:

7) Repeat for SYSTEM as the next screen shot, then click ok:

8) Repeat for CREATOR OWNER as the next screen shot, then click ok:

9) Repeat for EACH of the 3 "users" as the next screen shots:

10) Set the "everyone" permissions as the next screen shot, then click ok:

Then back at the "Advanced" screen, Maker sure to check the "Replace permission..." checkbox at the bottom, then OK your way back to the desktop.
