In a word, I don't. I've received several letters asking me what kind of hard drive, video card, modem, or whatever is best for a particular system, and my answer is always the same:
Look up some computer magazines that regularly publish product comparisons.
I can only give general information that applies to a generic class of equipment, regardless of brand. Computer magazines have the time and resources to buy and test dozens of different brands, perform detailed comparisons, and publish a (mostly) unbiased and informed opinion of which ones are better than others.
Some examples of magazines to look for are Computer Shopper (my personal choice when comparing prices), PC Computing, PC World, and Byte. There must be at least a dozen others; look in your local magazine stand for the computer section.
